Braid or Nylon?
A few years ago, the question was simple: should you fish with nylon monofilament or braided line? Many anglers automatically answered that thin braided line was superior because it offers long casting distance, high strength, rapid fish recovery, and excellent contact with the fish. Today, however, the answer is significantly more nuanced.
The main materials used today by both competitive and casual anglers fall into four main categories:
1. PE Braided Lines
2. Nylon (Mono)
3. Ester
4. Fluorocarbon
Each material serves a specific purpose with distinct pros and cons—especially regarding abrasion resistance, stretch, and sink rate through the water column.
– Pros: It features minimal stretch, providing immediate and outstanding contact with your lure. High-quality, ultra-thin braids cast extremely far and offer great durability.
– Cons: Truly lightweight micro-lures on a braided line will never sink as deep into the water column or reach the bottom as effectively as you might need. The buoyancy of the braid simply prevents the lure from getting down.
– When to use: At the start of a tournament or session when fish are aggressive, you are using heavier spoons, need maximum casting distance, and want to fish fast.
– Pros: Nylon offers solid knot strength, high toughness, and moderate stretch. It sinks through the water column better than braided line. It is easily the most versatile all-around material.
– Cons: When you require extreme sensitivity for subtle bites or highly specific lure presentations, nylon’s elasticity becomes a drawback. While it sinks faster than braid, it sinks slower than ester or fluorocarbon.
– Special Formulations: Modern nylon lines offer specialized treatments—such as enhanced sinking technologies (e.g., “VA-GS”) or low-stretch versions tailored for twitching techniques.
Ester is perhaps the least familiar and most exotic line material, yet in modern Japanese trout tournament fishing, it is a standard setup found on most rods.
– Pros: Extremely sensitive (nearly matching braid), casts exceptionally well, sinks faster than nylon, and transmits your exact rod movements straight to the lure.
– Cons: Requires careful handling—it tangles easily, has more line memory than nylon, lower tensile strength, and is relatively brittle. These drawbacks must be offset by using a leader (fluorocarbon/nylon).
– Recommendation: Beginners should look for user-friendly ester lines (such as those labeled ES2) designed to minimize memory and brittleness. Once mastered, it will significantly boost your catch rate.
Fluorocarbon is not just for leaders—it can also be spooled directly onto your main reel spool.
– Pros: Less stretchy than nylon, making it more sensitive (though not quite as sensitive as ester). It is dense, highly abrasion-resistant, and sinks faster than any other material mentioned.
– Cons: Stiffer and somewhat trickier to manage than nylon, though still far more manageable than ester.

The goal is not to debate which material is universally “best.” The key is understanding how each line’s characteristics affect lure trajectory, depth control in the water column, bite detection, and casting range:
– A material that sinks faster or has minimal stretch isn’t inherently “better”—it simply offers different attributes suited for specific conditions.
– Knowing when to pick a specific material and matching it with the right rod actions comes through trial, error, and experience on the water.
